‘Hengistbury Headlines’ – Call for Artists’ Proposals

Activate Performing Arts is preparing to once again transform the county’s landscape presenting Inside Out Dorset in September 2016 with 10 days of high quality, large scale outdoor theatre, dance, installation, and performance across Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole.

As part of this festival Activate is delighted to announce a nationwide call for artists’ proposals for 2016 event – ‘Hengistbury Headlines’.

This new temporary installation and performance trail, in the spectacular landscape of Hengistbury Head in Bournemouth, will be a key part of the 2016 Inside Out Dorset Festival. Artists are being asked to propose ideas which explore the landscape, heritage, wildlife and environment of Hengistbury Head, as well as the global issue of climate change. Climate Change is a pertinent subject and is the focus of a larger arts programme across the county led by Dorset Arts Trust.

The event follows on from the success of the South Dorset Ridgeway commissions trail ‘Ridgeway Responses’ which animated hills, lakes and villages in West Dorset delighting thousands of people in September 2014.

The new trail ‘Hengistbury Headlines’ will present work by up to nine artists and companies for free, to the public from Thursday 22nd – Sunday 25th September 2016.

Artists who are selected will be supported across a detailed year of development, working closely with experts on the environment, heritage and wildlife. The project aims to attract thousands of audience members next year, to learn more about Hengistbury Head and the effect that climate change is having on all of our lives and the environment.

Kate Wood – Executive Director says: ‘Hengistbury Head is such an inspiring location and exemplifies what makes this area so special. We are hugely grateful to Jerwood Charitable Foundation for making their first investment in our work, and also to the team at Bournemouth Borough Council, for welcoming us to Hengistbury Head. Jerwood Charitable Foundation’s commitment to supporting artists has been hugely valuable to us to help unlock other partners’ support for the project.’

Councillor Lawrence Williams (portfolio holder for Tourism, Leisure and the Arts) says, ‘Bournemouth Parks is delighted to have the opportunity to host the 2016 Inside Out Dorset Festival. Hengistbury Headlines will be an inclusive and inspirational event that will not only be great entertainment but also reinforce our key environmental messages in a completely different way. We look forward to developing the project with the Activate team and the selected artists to ultimately present a memorable experience for the local community and our many visitors from further afield.’

Tom Clarke – Project Development Manager at the RSPB comments: ‘The RSPB is excited to be co-funding a commission with Activate for Hengistbury Headlines. The arts have a great track record in interpreting our environment and inspiring people to connect with nature in unique ways. The theme of climate change and the stories around migration, pertinent to the Head itself, should make for an excellent arts and nature spectacle.’

An Artists’ Information Day will be held at Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre for people interested in applying on Saturday 7th November 2015.
