Following on from last year’s very well received ‘hot-mixed’ lime mortar day, and due to high demand, we have organised a repeat event at Weymouth College Stonemasonry and Conservation department at Poundbury in Dorset on the 16th March 2017. In recent years, forums, demonstrations and practical days have been held across the country, led by practitioners and professionals experienced in the use of hot-mixed lime mortars. These meetings have generated considerable interest in the use of quick lime on site and its increasing use in specifications. However, some contractors, conservators, clients and specifiers may begin to feel unsure when considering which type of mortar to use in different circumstances. At this time of heightened interest it is important to have clear information and an open debate concerning the use (and mis-use) of lime mortars whether mature lime putty, natural hydraulic lime or quick lime. Although the subject is complex and extensive, a day of discussion and sharing of knowledge can only be of benefit. With this in mind architects, surveyors, architectural technologists, conservation officers, conservators, stone masons and other practitioners have been invited to attend what is sure to be a great opportunity to learn and share knowledge. For this event Alison Henry (Senior Conservator in the Building Conservation and Research Team, Historic England), Nigel Copsey (the Earth, Stone and Lime Company) and Nick Durnan (conservator and consultant) will give talks on historic lime and hot-mixed lime mortars and the latest research in Natural Hydraulic Limes.
After the presentations there will be Q & A discussion with Alison, Nigel and Nick. A practical demonstration of hot-mixed lime mortars will be followed by hands on activities in our purpose-built covered work area. Hot Mixed Mortar 0930 Introduction and talk by Alison Henry.
